An affidavit is a signed written statement in which the person who signs the document (the “affiant”) swears that the contents of the statement are true. Affidavits often are used as evidence for purposes of a legal proceeding. For example, a criminal charge against a defendant may be based on an affidavit from a police officer investigating a crime.
