To prosecute is a verb that means to bring a legal case against a defendant. In the United States, we usually use the word prosecute in criminal cases. The state prosecutes a case against the defendant charged with a crime.

The government attorney who brings the case against the defendant is known as the prosecutor or the prosecution.  Federal prosecutors are known as “U.S. Attorneys”.
