A no-fault divorce is the opposite of a fault-based divorce. In a no-fault divorce, a spouse asks for the divorce because the couple no longer wishes to remain married. Sometimes the reason for the marriage is described as “irreconcilable differences”.

Some states only allow no-fault divorces. That is, when a spouse files for divorce, the spouse cannot blame the other spouse for the divorce.
