In a class action, one plaintiff or just a few plaintiffs bring a lawsuit on behalf of a group of plaintiffs.

The plaintiffs who bring the action are called “lead plaintiffs” or “named plaintiffs”.

Both federal and state courts allow class actions but such lawsuits must be approved by the Court before they can proceed.

Federal class actions are governed by Rule 23.
